Established on 3^rd July 1973, our college, popularly known as SD College, today stands steady as one of the top colleges of the region, which offers not just quality education, but an education that is value based and aims at accomplishing the overall growth of a student’s personality as well.

Instituted in the revered memory of Goswami Ganesh Dutta Ji, and under the dynamic leadership of Late Pt. Mohan Lal Ji, former Education, Home and Finance Minister, Punjab, with the support of eminent lawyers, public men and educationists including Late Prof. Roshan Lal Verma Ji, and his wife Late Smt. Kaushalaya Devi Verma Ji, the college has since its inception, scaled such laudable heights, that each soul associated with the college feels proud of the connection.

Located in Sector 32-C of Chandigarh, in a sprawling and beautifully landscaped campus of 16.5 acres, the college offers a charming ambience to all its inmates. The college is home to state-of-the-art infrastructure, comprising of four full fledged teaching blocks (i.e. the Arts, Commerce, Science and IT Blocks), housing as many as 150 spacious and well equipped Classrooms, 46 Laboratories, 6 Lecture Theaters and 2 Seminars Halls that are integral to a healthy teaching-learning experience. In addition to these, the college has set up Smart Classrooms, and has an elegant Library comprising of a Main Hall, Reading Hall and Digital Library, Recreation Hall, Sports Ground, Auditorium cum Gymnasium, College Canteen, Girls' Common Room, one three-storied Boys' Hostel comprising of three blocks and one Girls' Hostel comprising of two blocks.

It is such a top class infrastructure coupled with an erudite, dynamic and hard working set of faculty members that the college has attained pinnacles in the field of higher education. We have as many as 40 Ph.D.s, 27 M.Phil.s, 7 M.C.A.s, 3 LL.B.s and 5 M.B.A.s across the various departments of the college.

Be it about bagging top ranks in academics, sports and extra-curricular activities, or about sensitizing the students about the need to participate meaningfully in research and activities of social growth, SD College has always performed.

We at SD College offer courses of the most diverse nature at both the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate levels.

In addition, we also understand the need for education to be career oriented. It is in this context that the college has introduced 25 Career Oriented Add-on Courses that a student can opt for, parallel and in addition to the regular degree course that one is enrolled for. This number is the highest that any college in the country offers.

Along with disseminating wholesome education, the college also encourages the students to associate themselves with the numerous clubs of the college and participate in the various extension activities that the college is associated with. It is this comprehensive exposure and training that has been helping the students find jobs in some very coveted organizations and companies. Besides we have an effective Placement Cell that helps and supports our students in finding jobs as per their interest and potential.

Under the dynamic vision and dedicated guidance of our Principal Dr. A. C. Vaid and the undaunted support of the College Governing Body headed by its President Sh. Upkar Krishan Sharma, the college pledges to grow still further and promote wholesomely to the cause of higher education and contribute meaningful citizens to the society.

Even the UGC, New Delhi has recognized these endeavour and accomplishments of the institution and thus in 2006 accorded the college with the rare distinction of being “A College with Potential for Excellence.” Hence, our college is one of the few colleges (i.e. <1% of the total colleges in India) to have been bestowed with this honour.

In addition to this some other hallmarks of the college include:

•  Two departments of the college i.e. Department of Commerce and Management and the Department of Bio Sciences have been declared as “Star Departments” by UGC.  

•  We are the only college in North India to have been granted four innovative programmes recognized by the UGC. These include M.Sc. Applied Chemistry (Pharmaceutical), MEFB (Masters in Entrepreneurship and Family Business), M.Sc. Bioinformatics and Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Graphics and Animation.

•  The College was awarded the Certificate of Proficiency in Innovation, Management, Productivity, Quality and Services by the Global Organization of Business Entrepreneurs, Delhi.

•  We are the only college in the entire country to run 25 parallel Career Oriented 'Add on' Courses.

•  We are the only college in Northern India to have been granted the INFLIBNET connection worth Rs. 1.65 crores by the UGC. 

•  The college has signed MoUs with acclaimed foreign universities including University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), Canada and Normandy Business School, France and with industries like Shalimar Infonet Private Ltd. and Tally India (Pvt.) Ltd. for developing Enterprises Resource Planning (ERP).

•  The college has signed MoUs with the Chandigarh Chapter of Young Indians (YI), an initiative of CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) and with the Department of Education, Chandigarh Administration, to assist and supervise an 'Alternative Innovative Education Centre' of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan run in Government High School, Sector 35, Chandigarh.

In addition to these, various prestigious academic bodies have bestowed the college with numerous grants for the further consolidation and growth of the teaching, learning, infrastructure and research environment of the institution. In the current session itself, the college was awarded:

•  Grant of Rs. 1.18 crores under XI Plan of UGC, New Delhi, for the further enhancement of infrastructure and laboratories in the college.

•  We are the only college under PU, Chandigarh to receive a grant of Rs. 70 lakhs under the FIST Program, of the Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.
